Comprehensive improvement of the Crimean embankment

The project for the comprehensive reconstruction of the Crimean embankment involved the transformation of an unused four-lane road into a landscape park for all-season use. To implement it, car traffic was stopped and the gas station near the Crimean Bridge was removed. The new multi-level landscape was formed by pedestrian and bicycle paths, artificial hills and ponds, urban furniture and pavilions. The plastic wave motif connected all the elements into a single architectural whole.
The embankment area is conventionally divided into four functional zones. The transit space under the Crimean Bridge connected Gorky Park with the Crimean Embankment. At the same time, it became a shelter from bad weather and a venue for events - two amphitheaters and a podium stage appeared here.
“Vernisage” is an area for outdoor exhibitions and sales of works of art, organized in a wooden pavilion with a wavy canopy (project - “architects ass”)
“Fontannaya Square” faces the Central House of Artists building and is separated from the river by a linden alley. Its center is a “dry type” fountain. Jets of water fly out from controlled nozzles installed in the paving. The built-in dynamic lighting system provides a variety of light-color scenarios. The territory adjacent to the Central House of Artists building descends onto the fountain square via a stepped wooden deck. On the embankment side, 49 linden trees were planted in the manner of a regular French park. There is also outdoor furniture here - white metal stools and armchairs.
“Green Hills” is the eastern part of the embankment, where the main recreation areas are concentrated. There are artificial hills with ornamental grasses, trees and shrubs (maple, hawthorn, mountain ash, apple trees) here. There are walking and cycling paths between the hills. The man-made relief is emphasized by undulating wooden benches and sun loungers. In the center of this part of the park there is an artificial pond.
When landscaping the Crimean embankment, new principles and technologies were used for Moscow: planting perennial plants that do not require annual replanting; special boxes with a ventilation and irrigation system that allow trees (linden alley) to survive in an aggressive urban environment.
The modernist nature of the environment (proximity to the Central House of Artists building) dictated modern lighting solutions: lanterns of a laconic design, made according to a special project, and unobtrusive lamps built into the paving.
The pavilions located on the Crimean embankment are intended for cafes, shops, and bicycle rental. They have large-scale glazing, including fiberglass.
The pavilion closest to 3rd Golutvinsky Lane is equipped with a special concrete roof-ramp and serves as a slide for cyclists and skaters. The program and structure of the park includes a wide range of cultural and recreational opportunities for all seasons: walks, relaxing on benches with the best panoramic views in the capital, cycling, rollerblading, skateboarding, skiing and sledding, dancing and gymnastics classes (on the terrace near the Central House of Artists) , exhibitions, designer and food markets, etc.
The reconstructed embankment organically became part of the Muzeon Art Park and connected it with the Park named after. Gorky. The unified park space has become one of the most popular public and recreational spaces in the center of Moscow.
