Cinema "Udarnik"

The monument to Moscow constructivism will be restored by the end of 2027.
The capital has agreed on a project for the comprehensive restoration and adaptation of a monument of Moscow constructivism - the Udarnik cinema; it will retain its historical function. Specialists will tidy up the facades and interiors, and also equip the cinema with modern equipment for film screenings.
According to the comprehensive restoration project for the cinema, specialists will restore the roof with a special sliding mechanism, which was the hallmark of Udarnik. The site continues to dismantle the covering and sheathing of the roof, which was in disrepair. Restorers will have to open blocked openings on the cinema facade, preserve and recreate the domed ceilings on the ground floor, clean the surfaces of the facades from paint layers, remove repair plaster inserts, dismantle the concrete cladding of the basement, and replace windows and doors. Work is underway to strengthen the foundation. The terrazite plaster of the main facades and metal balcony railings will be restored.
After completion of work, film screenings, premieres and festivals will be held at Udarnik. The building will house several cinema halls, a café, a bookstore, and premises for educational and exhibition projects. A terrace and observation deck will be opened on the roof.
"Udarnik" was built as the first cinema showing sound films. In 1958, Udarnik became the venue for the first All-Union Film Festival. In 1959, on the initiative of Ekaterina Furtseva, it was decided to resume the Moscow Film Festival and “Udarnik” became its main venue. During the years of the MIFF from 1959 to 2001, Raj Kapoor, Gina Lollobrigida and other stars visited here. In addition to the MIFF, Udarnik hosted film festivals from different countries and screenings of foreign out-of-competition films
